Indian Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla Becomes First Indian to Step on the ISS
1. Historic Landing on ISS
On June 26, 2025, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force became the first Indian to step onto the International Space Station (ISS). He traveled aboard SpaceX’s Crew Dragon as part of the private Axiom Mission 4. The Dragon docked after about 28 hours from launch at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
2. Mission Details & Crew
The four-member crew includes mission commander Peggy Whitson (U.S.), along with astronauts from Poland and Hungary. This marks the first ISS visit for India, Poland, and Hungary in over 40 years.
3. A Personal Moment for India
Shukla spoke in Hindi on reaching orbit:
“Namaskar, my dear countrymen… This is not just my journey but the beginning of India’s human spaceflight journey.”
His hometown, Lucknow, celebrated proudly as local schools and family members followed his launch live.
4. Science Aboard the ISS
During their two-week stay, the crew will carry out over 60 experiments, including seven proposed by Indian researchers. Their work will cover microgravity’s effect on seeds, microbes, muscle health, computer screen use in space, and more.
5. Why It Matters for India
This mission is a key step toward India's own Gaganyaan program (first crewed mission planned for 2027). Shukla’s training and experience on the Crew Dragon and ISS will guide ISRO in preparing for successful future flights.
6. Global Cooperation in Space
Axiom 4, part of Axiom Space’s private missions, showcases rising public-private partnerships in space exploration. NASA, ISRO, SpaceX, and others are working together — marking a new era of commercial spaceflight.
